Due to a fit of disobedience and resentment, Jonah found himself in a dark place: the gut of a large fish. He imagined he was going to die. In despair, he cried out to God and repented of his willful disobedience. God gave him a second chance, and Jonah vowed, “I will make good.”
In the throes of his game-over prayer, he poignantly declared, “Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs.’” He cuts to the chase of what God has said all along. It was the first commandment and it captures the sin sickness that has plagued humankind since the fall.
We are prone to idolatry: celebrities, careers, athletes, ourselves, politicians, comfort, etc. Many “forfeit the grace that could be theirs.” Let us rend our hearts and examine where our affections lie. We can have no other gods before God Almighty. - Pastor Jimmy
